Book Review - Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft (Commemorative Hardback Edition)

H.P. Lovecraft is the author who, when I was but a wee lad, kicked started my interest in the Horror genre, so this collection was an instant buy for me, but was it worth it?

First off, since his reputation for weird, off the wall Gothic Horror is world renowned, I don't feel the need to review each story individually; best to look at this book as a whole. Is it a good introduction to Lovecraft and does it give you a worthwhile view into the 'dark and twisted mind' that produced a brand of Gothic Horror that has inspired countless books, films, games; and fashion trends?

To begin with, I find I must direct your notice to the cover. It is a beautiful looking book. Black, leather bound, with gold inlay, it stands out from other books on the shelf, drawing your attention to it like an otherworldly being; calling to you as from one of the stories it holds.

As a collection of Lovecraft stories, Necronomicon does indeed work well, whether you’re just starting to explore Lovecraft’s world, or a long-time fan. With stores such as ‘The Outsider’, ‘The Whisperer in the Darkness’ and ‘The Hound’, you are treated to an assortment of Lovecraft’s style. From the twisted dark reality to the paranoid infused citizens of this Gothic existence.

While one or two of the stories included are not, in my opinion, his best work, most are extremely good and there are some real classics in there. This makes the collective contents a good way to study the contrasting and conflicting ideas going on inside the authors head. This, in turns, not only presents a good cover to cover read for newcomers and fans alike but makes a good reference book for those who study not only Lovecraft, but Gothic Horror in general. All this adds up to a 'must own' collection for any horror fan, whether you are just a light reader of horror or a hardcore fan of the genre.

Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft (Commemorative Hardback Edition) is available on Amazon.
