10 Questions With Ryegrass Union
The folks at Ryegrass Union have kindly taken the time to speak with us. Based down in the historic county of Kent, England, their mix of Americana and English Folk is a pleasure to hear.
1. Who are you?
We are Ryegrass Union
2. How would you describe your music?
We describe it as a blend of Bluegrass, Americana and Folk. I don’t know if the dictionary would agree, but that evokes what we are about to me for sure.
3. What inspires you?
I guess anything one might call art or nature, it's all there to be drawn from. Music wise, the genius of other musicians, the pop, rock and folk music we grew up on and listening to where people like Chris Thile, Sierra Hull and Sarah Jarosz are taking Acoustic music to the next level.
4. What can we expect release wise?
We seem to reside mostly in the video format. There's an album’s worth of homespun tunes and songs in the bag, which we are slowly letting out into the world in the form of video sessions.
Even more so, at the moment while we are in lockdown, with these isolation videos musicians are using to fill the gig void.
Matt: I have it in mind that we could compile the audio of all these things into one album at some point, but I haven’t mentioned it to the others yet.
5. Are you Live Streaming in the Pandemic?
We are not. But we’re trying to put out a weekly video.
6. Why did you take up music?
Matt: Mostly because of Cat Steven’s, Peace Train, which I found very uplifting.
Trev: My uncle gave me his old guitar and I set about learning how to play it, I'm still learning now!
7. How to do set about writing/creating your music?
Matt: Inspiration first. I’ve tried sitting down and writing a song from nowhere, and nowhere is where I end up. Once I’ve got that bit of inspiration, a concept and bit of lyric, I’ll badger away at trying to write some music for what I have, then the whole thing will start to come together, or it won’t.
Trev: A similar approach, a line or two with a melody in my head and then put some music to it.
8. If the world was ending and you could only listen to one last song, what one would it be and why?
Matt: The Punch Brothers, 'Familiarity' - Might as well go out happy!
Trev: The Style Council, 'Le Depart' - It's a song for leaving!
9. Any funny/weird stories or experiences from your tours?
We were once playing a song at gig when a very fast and noisy motorbike went by, now whenever we are playing that same song, Matt ,does a superb rendition of said motorbike, right at the same point, which always makes us laugh!
Oh and Trevor’s eyes do not show up in photographs! Weird.
10. How do you want to go out, a Zombie Apocalypse or Alien Invasion?
Matt: The Zombie Apocalypse will not beat me, my Zombie strategy is meticulously planned!
Trev: I want to be fully armed with weapons of mass destruction.
